Otiorhynchus crataegi
A non-native broad-nosed beetle in the family Curculionidae, with obviously granulated pronotum, bristly scales on the wing-cases and strongly constricted waist giving it a bottom-heavy 'hourglass' outline.
May be confused with other Otiorhynchus species
- 5.4-6.5 mm
- Short, wide rostrum
- Strongly constricted waist
- Double tooth on underside of front femur
- Semi-erect scales in rows which are thick and bristle-like
- Granulated elytra and strongly granulated pronotum

Mainly associated with privet (Ligustrum) and hawthorn (Crataegus), but feeds on a broad range of trees and shrubs especially in gardens and other locations with ornamental plants.
Appears to be uncommon or under-recorded; records are currently concentrated in the southern half of the UK.
Rare in Leicestershire and Rutland. The Cropston record of 09 July 2021 is the first for VC55.
