Keen NatureSpot leaf mine fans have recently recorded a a nationally rare species of leaf miner - can you help us find more?
The larvae of the fly Phytomyza brunnipes causes leaf mines on Sanicle, Sanicula europaea. The fly is supposed to be nationally rare – but is it just under recorded? So far it has been found at two sites, Swithland and Willesley Wood. It's worth looking for if you visit a woodland with Sanicle, which is found mainly in north west Leicestershire, and in Leighfield forest and the Rutland ancient woodlands. Although Sanicle is no longer in flower (you'll need to be able to recognize the leaves), the mines should be detectable through November until the leaves fade away.
