Getting There

The Drift is a green lane track heading east from Pickworth to Stamford Road. This site is located on the western half of the lane. The closest main road is the A1.

From the A1, take the sliproad and then the signposted road to Pickworth heading eastwards. At the junction with Pickworth Road, go straight across onto The Drift (the dirt track).

There is no bus service to the area.

Description

Designated a Local Wildlife Site in 2006, The Drift verge at the Pickworth end is approximately 1,600 metres in length, on both sides of the track, varying between 1.5 and 2.5 metres in width. The main habitats are mesotrophic, calcareous and mixed grassland.

Wildlife Highlights

Recorded species include: Common Knapweed, Lady’s Bedstraw, Field Scabious, Meadow Vetchling, Birdsfoot-trefoil, Rest-harrow, Red Clover, Greater Knapweed, Burnet Saxifrage, Salad Burnet, Small Scabious, Cowslip, Bulbous Buttercup, Great Burnet, and Hoary Plantain.

In addition, Many-leaved Sedge (a species listed on the Leicestershire and Rutland Rare Plant Register 2007) has been recorded here.
